Republican Treason

It wasn’t enough for Trey Gowdy and a gang of Relublican assholes to meddle in foreign policy by writing directly to Iran – a pretentious and vain effort to undermine a sitting president in the exercise of his exclusive authority to negotiate with foreign governments and which flirted with the line between being an asshole and being a traitor.
In the wake of President Obama’s announcement of a negotiated agreement with Iran regarding their nuclear program, the Republicans have unanimously curled into the fetal position and begun crying like red-headed stepchildren.
Perhaps if they hadn’t marched in lockstep opposition to every single thing the president has ever attempted to do – and not as a matter of principle but as a matter of determined ratfucking – they would still have a single tattered shred of credibility on which to hang their mewling, pants-wetting objections.
They opposed health care reform (an idea cooked up by their own greedhead hacks at the Heritage Foundation), supported DADT and DOMA, and rejoiced over Hobby Lobby but screamed about activist judges and tyranny at Obergefell. They are petulant fucking children who expect and demand that everything – every single fucking thing – be determined in their favour. Always.

Nevertheless, let’s be specific here. They are shedding tears today for the death of all things good, right and true as evidenced by this specific deal with Iran. Some history may be illuminating:
In 1953 Republicans acting in the service of British Petroleum sent the CIA to assassinate the democratically elected leader of Iran, Mossadeq, and install the brutal, tyrannical murderer and puppet the Shah.
After the Iranian people turfed his criminal ass (which the United States saved from ever facing the justice demanded by his own people), they spent the next 40 years provoking, demonizing and lying about Iran.
Then, GW Bush fabricated blatant lies about Iraqi WMDs and, in the greatest foreign policy disaster of all time, illegally started a war to remove the one element that stood as a bulwark against the rise of Iranian influence in the region – another American puppet and BFF of Don Rumsfeld, Saddam Hussein.

Following the destruction of Iraq and the consequential rise of ISIS (which both America AND Iran would like to see destroyed), the Republicans NOW mewl and bawl that any deal with Iran that does not give the GOP every single thing their cowboy delusions imagine they must have (and are downright eager to bomb Iran if they don’t get) must be opposed.
And their castrated, orange-hued leader, who supports torture, rendition, indefinite detention and survives by drinking the panic sweat from Lindsey Graham’s scrotum, has the nerve to call Iran the largest sponsor of state terrorism.

Political commonwealth (not to mention reason) is not possible with the stubbornly ignorant, mendacious, venal pieces of worm shit that comprise the GOP.

Bibi May I?

This is not what anyone needs in the oval office.

“If I’m president of the United States, I will exercise sobriety, care, stability, and make sure that in a setting like this, anything I say that can affect a place with rockets going in, with people dying, I don’t do anything that will harm that process,” Romney said in reference to Israel.

“And therefore before I made a statement of that nature, I’d get on the phone to my friend [Israeli Prime Minister] Bibi Netanyahu and say, ‘Would it help if I said this? What would you like me to do? Let’s work together because we’re partners.'”

Would it help if I said this? What would you like me to do?
Jumped up jesus on skis, Mitt…did you think the anti-Semitic assholes carving at the edges of American foreign policy lacked ammunition? Idiot.

Netanyahu, Israel and America

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is in the US this week. In the wake of President Obama’s speech calling for a peace settlement based on the 1967 borders with negotiated land swaps to ensure the security of Israel, a laundry list of the usual Republican fuckwits began screaming that the president was throwing Israel under the bus. Netanyahu himself intentionally distorted the president’s remarks and has been sucking up to the American right wing, even going so far as to appear on Hannity, perhaps the most partisan, dishonest ass on American network television.

Speaking before Congress yesterday, Netanyahu said:

“Israel will not return to the indefensible boundaries of 1967,” Netanyahu said, prompting a big standing ovation.

Later he added: “Israel on the 1967 lines would be only 9 miles wide. So much for defensible borders.”

As Netanyahu himself pointed out, the President has not called on Israel to return to the exact 1967 borders. The President has said that a peace agreement should be “based on 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.”

I want to tread a very fine line here.
I am not a supporter of Netanyahu. I am not a supporter of Israel’s expansion of the settlements or their conduct in the occupied territories. I support a two-state solution; a secure homeland for the Palestinians. Watching the Republicans play this issue on Netanyahu’s coattails for political points against the president makes me angry and frustrated.

That said, I support Israel as a homeland for the Jews; its right to exist within secure borders.

There is a danger in much of the reflexive, “I’m so sick of Israel and all the money we send them! AIPAC can suck it!” rhetoric that is flaring up. Not to say there’s no justification for it, but it comes awfully close to the sort of thing one finds on Storm Front.
And thus we come to the fine line…
Not everyone who opposes Israel is an anti-Semite. But when one’s principled opposition to Israeli policies, and by extension American policies, finds one standing shoulder to shoulder with skinheads and neo-Nazis, chanting very similar slogans, THAT ought to give one pause.

This is not a case of playing the race card. It is simply to acknowledge that there IS antisemitism out there, and that it’s woven through American culture in very subtle (and not so subtle) ways. Glenn Beck’s attacks on George Soros accusing him of profiting from leading Jews to the camps was not JUST the ranting of a contemptible, lying assclown – it’s a calculated appeal to a hateful paranoia that is in no way uncommon and not far beneath the surface.

Yes, America has done much for Israel and the Jews. That is not a one way street.
Einstein and Oppenheimer did much for America (not to mention the Coen brothers)…the diphtheria test, the contraceptive pill, streptomycin, the polio vaccine – the list of Nobel prizes awarded to American Jews in medicine alone will peel your skull back. Have a look for yourself.
And not only medicine. Some other American Jews you know: Alan Greenspan, Paul Krugman, Milton Friedman and Josef Steiglitz; Noam Chomsky; Richard Feynman, Murray Gell-Mann, Carl Sagan, Wolfgang Pauli, and Leonard Susskind; Erich Fromm, Steven Pinker; Louis Brandeis, Ruth Bader-Ginsberg, Elena Kagan, Abe Fortas and Benjamin Cardozo.
I haven’t even considered the writers, composers, singers, actors and playwrights…and you can keep Bob Dylan.

There must be a line between the “Israel right or wrong” bullshit that comes oozing from the gob of ignorant fuckwits like Sarah Palin, and “Fuck those power hungry AIPAC, Palestinian genocide, greedy banker Jews!”
And America needs to find it or something really fucking ugly and regrettable will be the result.

Obama: Sorry…I Was Busy.

Posthumous Kennedy Slanders

Judicial Watch, which contradictorily describes itself as both conservative and non-partisan, has used the Freedom of Information Act to expose previously redacted FBI files concerning the late Senator Ted Kennedy.

Turns out that while visiting South American countries, Ted wanted to meet with members of the left-wing, and apparently visited legal brothels.

From Judicial Watch:

“The FBI’s reluctance to follow the law and release this material shows that it, too, is not above politics. Our tough fight with the Obama administration shows that it was not keen on letting the American people know that Ted Kennedy, one of Obama’s leftist politician heroes, liked to hang out with communists and prostitutes,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “We will continue to investigate why the FBI improperly chose to keep this information secret.”

As opposed to hanging out with folks like Auggie Pinochet, Manny Noreiga and Danny Ortega – the traditional Southern Hemisphere pals of American assholes.
Commies and whores, eh? I guess that makes Teddy very much like Jesus.

Safe and Free

I have nothing but the most profound respect for those who serve.
Nevertheless, it pisses me off to an indescribable degree when people say, “They’re keeping us SAFE and FREE.”
No, they aren’t. They serve, and at great personal risk. But what they do has NOTHING to do with keeping us either SAFE or FREE, and dressing it up as though they do, rather than admitting the truth, does both them and “Us” the worst sort of disservice. Neither Iraq nor Afghanistan was EVER a threat to the freedom or safety of America. Not once. Not ever.
If you want to respect those who serve, at least be honest about how they’re being wasted.

Hitchens d. Blair: Religion = Evil

Tony Blair and Christopher Hitchens debated the question of whether religion is a force for good. As anyone who has ever debated Hitchens might tell you, the only way to win a debate with Hitchens is not to play…but as Hitchens would remind you, that ain’t winning. There may be a few with the intellectual capacity, and a handful possessed of sufficient rhetorical style, but no one plays at both ends of the court like Hitch.
As the BBC reports, and as might have been expected, Hitch carried the day by a 2-1 margin. Of course, he did have the advantage of being right.
