In the wake of the attack at a Wisconsin Sikh temple, I was reaching for my stopwatch to time the interval before some idiotic bible thumping ignoramus found a way to make things uglier. Pat Robertson got out of the blocks before I could start the timer.
Robertson, who blamed 9/11 on tolerance for gays, asserted on his television program that what caused 40-year-old Army vet Wade Michael Page – at least an associate of white power groups and a member of something called a “Hate Rock” band – to murder Sikh’s at worship was that atheists hate god.
“What is it?” the TV preacher wondered. “Is it satanic? Is it some spiritual thing, people who are atheists, they hate God, they hate the expression of God? And they are angry with the world, angry with themselves, angry with society and they take it out on innocent people who are worshiping God.”
“And whether it’s a Sikh temple or a Baptist church or a Catholic church or a Muslim mosque, whatever it is, I just abhor this kind of violence, and it’s the the kind of thing that we should do something about,” he added. “But what do you do? Well, you talk about the love of God and hope it has some impact.”
First of all, the White Power movement, to which the shooter has been linked, is a notoriously Christian gang of brainless thugs. There is no evidence whatsoever tying Page to atheism. He does, on the other hand, sport a tattoo of a Celtic Knot – a symbol of the Holy Trinity.
Secondly, atheists no more hate god than we hate unicorns or Santa Claus. Sane people do not invest their energy hating things that don’t exist. Better to invest that energy in opposing bigoted, shit-for-brains bible thumpers who make their living vomiting liquified hate and ignorant nonsense to deflect from the ever more obvious fact that the vast majority of these tragic events are conducted by those who believe they are doing god’s will.
Lastly, of one thing I’m certain: Had Wade Michael Page taken his guns to a meeting of atheists and murdered a handful of unbelievers, Pat Robertson would gleefully blame the victims – If they had not rejected god, this would not have happened. Because in the blinkered world of theistic buffoons, all good things come from god and all bad things come from rejecting god. When Bishops rape children, pastors do meth with male prostitutes, and ministers embezzle from their congregations, it’s because someone, somewhere didn’t believe in the omnipotent powers of magical sky wizard who, it should be noted, didn’t lift a fucking finger to prevent yet one more tragedy.
