GOP Racists – Virginia

Yeah, yeah…I know. It’s reached the point where saying that the Republicans are shot through with racists is redundant.
The most recent evidence comes out of Virginia. From TPM:

Virginia Beach Republican Party chair Dave Bartholomew forwarded a racist email comparing African Americans to dogs. The email, subject line “my, dog,” consists of a racist parable about African Americans and welfare. In the first 24 hours since the email came to light, Democrats condemned Bartholomew and he resigned his position with the Republican Party.

The text of the message, in full:

I went down this morning to sign up my Dog for welfare.

At first the lady said, “Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare”.

So I explained to her that my Dog is black, unemployed, lazy, can’t speak English and has no frigging clue who his Daddy is.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify…

My Dog gets his first check Friday.

Is this a great country or what?

“This type of racist behavior has no place in politics,” Rep. Glenn Nye (D-VA), who represents the Second District that includes Virgina Beach, told Blue Virgina.

Nye’s Republican opponent, Scott Rigell, issued a statement condemning the email as well. He called the email “reprehensible” and said “it stands in stark contrast to the core values of the Republican Party, the party of Lincoln, and my personal belief in a colorblind society.

While Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, the GOP has come a long fucking way since those days. One would not expect Lincoln to endorse or employ a favoured GOP tactic – the purely racist Southern Strategy. But beyond that, those words: “…my personal belief in a color blind society.”
That’s such a fucking facade – the sort of thing a pure racist SAYS when they want to cover their true character – because anyone who claims, “I don’t even see skin color!” is already lying to you. It’s the first thing everyone SEES. The thing is not to make decisions about someone, or how you treat them, based on that trait. But the fact remains, anyone who claims to be “color blind” is plainly lying and therefore cannot be trusted.

  1. This type of simplistic, obvious, and undeniable racism has no place in politics.

However, complex, obtuse, plausibly deniable, racism most certainly does.
