After demonstrating to the whole world at the Winter Olympics what a really decent bunch of folks are Canadians (with the minor exception of some perfectly well-earned and deserved jubilant gloating over that gold medal in hockey, proving our global superiority at the game, especially over the talentless and insufferable Yanks…), Canada has provided yet further evidence that it is simply one of the best places on earth.
A protest by hundreds of students led organizers to cancel a Tuesday night speech by American conservative commentator Ann Coulter at the University of Ottawa.
A spokesman for the organizers said Coulter was advised against appearing after about 2,000 “threatening” students crowded the entrance to Marion Hall, posing a security threat.
“It would be physically dangerous for Ann Coulter to proceed with this event,” said conservative political activist Ezra Levant inside the hall.
Ezra Levant is a right wing lawyer and activist who has spent more time stirring up shit in Canada than anything else. Opposed to immigration, multiculturalism, Muslims, Quebec, bilingualism and a bunch of other things that give Glenn Beck willies, Levant is also a supporter of Holocaust deniers. It comes as no surprise to find his swollen head jammed up Ann Coulter’s ass.
Ann Coulter, of course, is the American right wing Harpie who spends more time saying offensive things about anyone who isn’t a Christian conservative fan of Joseph McCarthy than anything else. She claims there’s a political point behind her hate speech but never bothers to explain what it is, merely smirking and describing her insults as “jokes”.
Coulter…was in the middle of a three-city tour of Canada, which began at the University of Western Ontario in London on Monday, and ends in Calgary on Thursday.
The event in London went without incident, but not without controversy.
When answering questions from students, Coulter told a 17-year-old Muslim student to “take a camel” instead of the flying carpet she has previously suggested Muslims use for transportation. Coulter later told CTV that the “camel” remark was a joke.
In addition to expressing her sharp-as-wet-cardboard wit, Coulter commonly either lies or simply doesn’t know what she’s talking about.
When Canada refused to join the USA in invading Iraq, Ann said that we should feel lucky that America permits Canada to exist on the same continent. In an interview with a Canadian journalist on the subject, Coulter insisted that Canada had participated in Vietnam. When it was pointed out to her that she was wrong, she again insisted that she was correct and offered to look into the matter and get back to him.
Facts and honest debate are not things Ann Coulter does. She is a snotty, arrogant, poorly informed, lying, insulting polemic provocateur whose vocabulary is littered with epithets and contempt for clear thought and fair argument.
Kudos to the students who managed to prevent her from opening her hateful trap. As Winston Churchill said, “Your right to an opinion does not obligate me to take you seriously.”
Ann Coulter’s right to freedom of thought and expression in no way obligates the citizens of Canada or the students at the University of Ottawa to tolerate the sort of bile and crap that she leaves in her wake.
