And you thought elections were boring. In Taiwan, there’s always something to make you say, “What the fuck?!?”
Realizing he had lost his seat, Chen Chen-hui, 56, made his way late to the campaign headquarters of his triumphant opponent in the south of the island on Saturday toting a loaded gun.
The sight of Mr Chen visibly inebriated and carrying a lethal weapon created panic in the crowd as they celebrated the victory of their candidate in the southern town of Huwei – a stronghold of the DPP. Some tried to wrestle the gun from the drunken visitor – a well-known introvert nicknamed “Tongue-tied Hui”.
In the ensuing struggle, Mr Chen fired off a shot. The bullet smashed into the floor and fragments hit the sister of his successful rival in the leg. The assailant was ordered detained on suspicion of attempted murder and unauthorized possession of a firearm. The first charge relates mainly to his decision to carry a loaded gun into the headquarters of his competitor.
