Evan Solomon is a Twat

It’s nice to be a Canadian. Banting, Billy Bishop, Gretzky, Glenn Gould, Oscar Peterson, Neil Young, Norman Bethune, Fleming, Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Tim Horton, Robertson Davies, Mordechai Richler, Alexander Graham Bell, David Suzuki and maple syrup gives one lots to feel pretty damn good about.
Of course, sooner or later someone always counters with Bryan Adams, Celine Dion and Avril Lavigne. Those with really bad taste in music might try to squeeze RUSH in (they actually belong in the first paragraph), and those with no knowledge of music might point to Conrad Black and cock an eyebrow.
I still say, all things considered, Canadians are kicking along pretty well. Sadly, however, I recently discovered another stain the true North, strong and free, must suffer: Evan Solomon.

A graduate of McGill University (what a giveaway!), this pretentious little bag of ignorant boogers apparently wrote a book and now hosts a weekend news program on the CBC. I’d never heard of the arrogant gasbag until I stumbled across this interview with Richard Dawkins.
Of course, Dawkins habitually makes himself available for interviews and debates, so he must be rather used to dealing with the facile arguments and insipid questions that blither from the lipless yap of this obtuse little shit.
Watch at the end of the clip, when they cut back to the studio, for the utterly vapid comments from Solomon’s imbecilic co-host.
Someone should start a petition. No more maple syrup, salmon, lobster or seal flipper pie for Evan Solomon. He will be turned away from Neil Young concerts and all of his Stompin’ Tom Connors CDs will be confiscated. He will be forced to rise at 4AM the morning after a snowfall and made to shovel ALL of the driveways in his neighbourhood. Until he renounces his Canadian citizenship, he should be treated like an American – we’ll be civil, of course, but we’ll laugh at him behind his back and wish he’d go away. I’m sure they’d love him in Texas. Steers and queers, eh? (Apologies to queers…and steers.)

  1. Funny. I’ve never heard of him, But I’m one of those silly American idiots. Anyway, Dawkins is always fun to listen to. Nice blog post. Dugg.

  2. Off topic, but another vile fundie fuck just shot an abortion doctor to death in Kansas. Pro-life my fucking ass.

  3. Operation Rescue, the protesting opponents of this doctor, posted on their website that that are praying for the family and hope they can find “the healing and comfort that CAN ONLY BE FOUND IN JESUS CHRIST.”

Motherfuckers! Given that the murdering bastard who shot Dr. Tiller would insist that he was following the call of Jesus when he pulled the goddamn trigger, one wonders just how bitter that comfort might be.
    Fucking hypocrites!

  4. I didn’t find anything in that interview that was particularly stupid or offensive. The Hitler-Stalin exchange came close. Hitler used any religion he could get his hands on for both positive and negative motivations.

I think Dawkins poorly answered the question about the Darwinian angle to the desire to do good for others and Solomon saw his chance to best him. The better answer would have been:

“Because doing good for strangers helps build your social capital. The person you help may someday return the favour. But being known as a person that does good makes you a more desirable person to be around and a more desiriable person to invest time and resources in.

It shows potential mates that you are caring and supportive. Having such tendencies increases the odds of mating and raising the offspring to full term, thus passing on the genes to the next generation. It also shows potential political, economical, or social allies that you are worth investing in, which also assists in your survival and success of that of your offspring…And it usually makes you feel good too.”

The biggest problem with this interview is that both parties showed up ready for battle and that’s what came across, two people trying to top each other.

But, Evan Solomon IS a twat. It’s the perfect word for him.

I knew of his Shift Magazine partner (friend of friends) and know what a tight pair the two were. (lovers?) They weren’t evil or stupid, just deeply driven to show everyone how smart they were. They loved being a pain in everyone’s ass and constantly were striving to be the Top Dog. The interview is evidence that nothing has changed since High School. People who have this character flaw often come across looking stupid due to their overzealousness. (I occasionally suffer from it, so I know the deal.)

Carol McNeil is an even bigger twat with less than 10% of Solomon’s brainpower. According to the late lamented Frank Magazine, she is sleeping with at least one of her bosses and sure as hell acts like it.

    • @ Sedate Me

I meant to get back to you on this comment long ago. Pardon the delay.
Dawkins’ point was most excellent, although not as fleshed out as it might have been.
For the vast bulk of human evolution, we NEVER met anyone who was not part of our family (esp.extended family), immediate tribe, or even within living memory from beyond “the county line”.

There really was no “kindness to strangers” except for the ONE who showed up once in awhile (as distinct from the other 1000 or so people one encountered every day, after day, after day).

It is a very, very new thing (in evolutionary terms – genetic, of course, but social too) for people to live in an environment where one DOES NOT see the 1000 people you know every day; where the vast majority of interactions happen with people you have never seen before and will likely never see again.
The idea of social contract – at least in the way I take that you employ it – is defeated (I think) by simple circumstance.
For that matter, if what you are aiming at has weight, it only goes to reinforce the far more fundamental notion suggested by Dawkins in his argument.
In today’s world, the likelihood of “payback” or “return on investment” is directly proportional to (and predicated on) degree of relatedness or, at least, familiarity. That is a trait that grew out of our tribal heritage far more directly than cold calculation of ROI might generate.

  5. And RUSH kicks ass! Lot better than the American Rush, that’s for damn sure.

  6. This just in “Evan Solomon is a twat” Department”

Yeah that’s right. The CBC is has sunk to showing spelling bees and guess what little twat is hosting.
