Senator Lindsey Graham on Dick Cheney and Torture

Lindsey Graham argues that torture exists is because it works. If it didn’t work, people would have stopped using it.

The Vice President is suggesting that there was good information obtained, and I’d like the committee to get that information. Let’s have both sides of the story here. I mean, one of the reasons these techniques have survived for about 500 years is apparently they work.

Former FBI interrogator Ali Soufan responded, “Because, sir, there’s a lot of people who don’t know how to interrogate, and it’s easier to hit somebody than outsmart them.”

Watch it:

Let’s just take a moment to recall ONE of the things that torture has been used to demonstrate as true over those five centuries: Witchcraft.
Now, if torture can make someone admit to being a witch, it’s clearly well designed for getting truthful information…any truth you want.
And let me remind you that Sarah Palin’s pastor not only believes in witches, he has personally set lynch mobs on witches.
What kind of comedy is this?
I do not believe, and the evidence thus far from all concerned (with the notable exception of the Cheney family and sundry stalwart chickenhawk neocons) bears me out, that any actionable intelligence was obtained through torture, but let’s assume there was.
Has it come to this? Has it come to It’s okay to torture so long as we get something for it?
What is it that’s worth becoming a torturer…and how do you know before you do it?
They posit the ticking time bomb, and then point wildly in all directions at imaginary bombs they insist are ticking – bombs they have deomnstrably lied about in the past…well, save the one they were warned about and did nothing to prevent.
What kind of tragedy is this?

  1. Well said. What gets me about the “torture works” argument is that actually, according to some of the most successful interrogators we have, torture doesn’t work.

Major Alexander, the interrogator who discovered the location of Al-Zarqawi, argues that torture is ineffective and produces false information. He has decades of experience, and he was able to get a hold of crucial information precisely because he opted not to torture.

  2. It’s OK for me to rape, because rape has been around for thousands of years. It must work…

  3. If by “works” you mean, “gives evil motherfuckers like Cheney and Rumsfeld boners”, then yes, torture works.
