Barack! How Not to LOSE This Thing

I’ve joked before that Barack Obama is too wordy.  Thoughtful, nuanced, considered.  It’s a sad and pathetic fact:  The American electorate is too goddamn stupid to parse a sentence with more than one comma in it.
It’s good to be educated…smart…clever…just fucking brighter than the next guy.  That’s what we should want in a president.  Haven’t we figured that out by now?  Hasn’t eight years of a baboon president too stupid to pour piss out of a boot taught us anything?
Unfortunately being thoughtful goes nowhere with the low-information, knee-jerk imbeciles who voted for BushCo twice.  Fuck independents.  This election will be decided by the stupid vote.
Lies in crispy little soundbites.  That’s all idiots need to choose the captain of the cheer squad – just some reason to excuse their subtle unspoken racism.
Sarah Palin.  Her spirit.  Her style.  What cold Rovian calculation.
If skin tone doesn’t sink us, Obama’s smart and wordy shit is gonna cost us the election.  It’s one thing to be black and hopeful.  It’s another thing altogether to be black and smarter than the next guy.  Some things just will not sell.  Bill Maher almost gets it
If we want to win this fucker, we need to communicate directly with Joe Voting Booth.  We need to understand that Joe pulls the lever on emotion, not reason.
It’s not that Obama’s speaking style comes off as condescending in that William F. Buckley snooty Ivy League forty-dollar vocabulary way, or even the clipped impatience of a Gore Vidal or Noam Chomsky, as though he were scolding a small child who just wasn’t paying attention.
It’s that the nuanced approach simply does not sell to an electorate conditioned for soundbites.  Elections are not won by making insightful people think about issues.  Elections are won by making stupid people embrace your message.  Never overestimate the collective intelligence of the voters you need.
Obama, bless his heart, wants people to live up to their better nature; to rise beyond anything they might achieve alone.  Beautiful PUTZ.
It is now all too apparent, in the wake of the pasty Republican Moose Mama bump, that dumbing down the message into bite-sized Flintstones chewable vitamins, designed for voters dumber than stumps, is the only way to win this thing.
If zippy little clips are not bouncing around inside American skulls, we lose.  Truth doesn’t matter –  although it’s nice we’ve got that too.
Marshall McLuhan was almost right, but he missed the way packaging and presentation defines both the message and the medium.

The cold, hard truth of American electoral politics is that being smarter than everyone else is only an asset if you get elected.  In terms of getting elected, it is all too apparently a handicap.
If we are to win this thing – to send the evil Bush, Rove, Cheney, Miers, Libby, Rumsfeld, Gonazalez neocon lying fuckwits back to whatever depraved, heartless, putrid corner of Fuck You from whence they came, Barack Obama needs to condense the message and stop being so fucking polite.

I select here the first bit of Obama’s own words I could find to illustrate my point.  I think it’s from his recent interview with Olberman:

They’re not telling the truth. You know, I mean, it’s – I think we’ve all gotten accustomed to being able to spin things in politics. But when you’ve got somebody who was for a project being presented as being against it, then that, you know, stretches the bounds of spin into new areas.
And you know, as far as John McCain is concerned, you know, I think that Senator McCain has, on occasion, broken with his party, but this notion that, as he said at his convention, that he would tell the lobbyists that they’re not going to be running Washington anymore, who is he going to tell, his campaign chairman, Charlie Black, his campaign manager, Rick Davis, two of the largest corporate lobbyists in Washington with client lists that extend into every major industry?
You know, there is just a sense that they’re making these assertions that ignore the facts of their campaigns and their past history. And I think people should be troubled by that.

Let’s take one sentence at a time.

They’re not telling the truth.

This is a short sentence, but it can be better.  Try this:  THEY’RE LYING.

You know, I mean, it’s – I think we’ve all gotten accustomed to being able to spin things in politics.

Accustomed?  We’ve become accustomed to Being Able to SPIN things.  Could you be any more milk toast about it?
Better:  I’m tired of being PISSED ON and told it’s raining.

But when you’ve got somebody who was for a project being presented as being against it, then that, you know, stretches the bounds of spin into new areas.

A project?  Presented?  Stretches the bounds of spin?  Sometimes I want to slap you.
It wasn’t a project.  It was a bridge.
Palin took over 200 MILLION dollars for a bridge.  The bridge was not built.  Palin kept the money.  That’s fraud.
Palin says she told Congress “no thanks”.  That’s a lie.
Sarah Palin is a fraud and a liar.
There are no bounds to spin (except for Tucker).

I considered, as an exercise, making this sentence longer.  It can be done – Wolf Blitzer could do it without even trying.  But why?
Chewable chunks:
John McCain calls himself a maverick.  He says he’s going to get rid of lobbyists.  John McCain has lobbyists telling him to say that.
Google it for yourself!  Google CHARLIE BLACK and RICK DAVIS – two lobbyists who run the McCain campaign.  If John knew how to use ‘the Google’, maybe he’d have someone else putting words in his mouth.  Charlie and Rick have taken millions from foreign governments and big business.  These guys will do anything for a buck…well, maybe a buck and a half.  They are lying to you.

You know, there is just a sense that they’re making these assertions that ignore the facts of their campaigns and their past history. And I think people should be troubled by that.

A SENSE?  Assertions?  Ignore the facts of their campaigns and history?  TROUBLED?
You fucking panty-waist!  Are you TRYING to lose this election?
John McCain and Sarah Palin are LIARS, playing to emotion, fear, foolishness and distortion.  They think you’re stupid enough to fall for it.  I have news for you.  If you believe them, you are stupid.

  1. Right on man. I love ” The Stupid Vote” thing. I have friends who will vote for her and Mc Cain even though Palin and Mc Cain get on TV and bold face lie. My friends are just as you say, stupid. I think i will re- evaluate those friendships.
